MP Caleb Amisi Accuses Government of Neglecting Education with Reduced School Funds

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has accused the government of neglecting the future of the country by reducing capitation funds for secondary schools.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi informed the National Assembly Committee on Education that the government is unable to sustain the full capitation of Sh 22,000 per secondary school student and is now managing only Ksh.16,600.

Mr. Amisi stated that the reduction in capitation fees undermines education, which is crucial for the country's socioeconomic growth.

"How can our country competitively position itself on the global stage if we don't value education, which is an equalizer?" questioned the MP during the disbursement of bursary cheques amounting to Sh71.7 million to school heads.

He pointed out the irony of the government's economic development goals for the country while there is no adequate corresponding funding to achieve those goals.

"The Competence-Based Curriculum, which has been touted as a game changer, is not working, yet we want to grow like Korea and Japan," he observed.

He also expressed regret that Parliament has been taken over by the executive, making it unable to effectively carry out its oversight role.

"The president and my party leader have total control over how parliamentarians vote, which undermines the independence of the National Assembly and Senate," he noted.

The first phase of the bursary disbursement has benefitted 15,000 applicants, while the remaining 9,000 will be included in a second phase soon.

Sabaot Elders Oppose Pressure for Deputy Governor Kapkory’s Resignation

A section of Sabaot elders has strongly opposed renewed pressure from senior political figures seeking the resignation of Trans Nzoia Deputy Governor Philomena Kapkory, terming the efforts illegal, politically motivated, and disrespectful to the electoral will of the people. The elders accused unnamed powerful individuals of orchestrating a scheme to coerce Ms. Kapkory into relinquishing her office in exchange for a promised high-ranking appointment in the national government. Led by Mr. Samuel Kiboi, the group condemned what they termed "political blackmail" and insisted that the Deputy Governor's position is secured by law and not subject to political manipulation. “The County Government operates under a well-structured legal framework. A Deputy Governor can only leave office through clear constitutional processes, not coercion,” said Mr. Kiboi during a press briefing in Kitale. “She was not appointed; she was elected by the people alongside the Governor. The Kenya County Government Workers Union in Trans Nzoia has demanded accountability from County Secretary Truphosa Amere following a violent attack on county enforcement officers by machete-wielding goons during a clearance operation on disputed land. The union’s county chairman Samuel Kiboi condemned the incident, questioning why the officers were dispatched without proper legal backing or security support. “Why did she authorize the officers to embark on such a risky mission without a court order or an eviction notice? They could have lost their lives in that confrontation," said Mr. Kiboi. Kiboi further criticized the County Secretary for failing to involve police in the operation, calling the decision “irresponsible and reckless. The land, which has been the subject of an ownership dispute between th...
